Eat Low Carbon

Eat Low Carbon

Climate Week Cuisine shows people
how they can eat delicious food that
costs less and is more environmentally
friendly. By taking part in Climate Week
Cuisine people all over Britain cooked
and ate meals that reduced their
impact on the environment.

Low-Carbon Meals

Our call to action for Climate Week
2012 was to eat a low carbon meal
during Climate Week. Here are a few
of the ways that people chose to
prepare their meals to ensure it was
more environmentally friendly:

  • LESS – eat less meat and dairy

  • Meat and dairy have high carbon footprints. People prepared meals that were vegetarian or even vegan.

  • LOCAL – eat local, seasonal ingredients

  • People chose ingredients that haven’t come from half way around the world. Meals were made from British produce that hadn’t been kept in cold storage for months.

  • LEFTOVERS – eat food that would otherwise be thrown away

  • Instead of throwing leftover food in the bin people found ways to turn it into a tasty treat for later. Cutting down on food waste is a great way to cook more sustainably.

    Climate Week Cuisine Competition

From the 12th-18th of March people submitted their low carbon recipes to be part of Climate Week Cuisine. The winning Raw Chocolate Brownies recipe was from Ceri Jones in London. She received the grand prize of a gift card from Tesco worth £200. Click here to see her recipe and find out what the nine other finalists cooked.
